A massive fire erupted on the third floor of Acropolis Mall in southern Kolkata on Friday, sparking immediate evacuation efforts and a large-scale rescue operation. The blaze, which started around 12:15 pm, engulfed the area in thick smoke and brought traffic to a standstill in front of the mall as authorities worked to control the situation.
As soon as the fire was reported, authorities swiftly evacuated the building to ensure the safety of the occupants. Fortunately, no injuries have been reported so far. Ten fire tenders were deployed to combat the flames, with firefighters donning oxygen masks to enter the smoke-filled building. The senior officer of Kolkata Traffic Police confirmed that traffic in the vicinity was regulated to facilitate the rescue operations.
The cause of the fire remains unknown as firefighting efforts continue. A senior fire department official stated, "As of now, there is no report of any injury. Firefighting operations are underway. Some firefighters have entered the building wearing oxygen masks." The swift response by the fire department, which included deploying 15 fire tenders, has been crucial in bringing the fire under control.
The incident has caused significant disruption in the Kasba area, a busy commercial hub in Kolkata. The dense smoke and restricted traffic have impacted local businesses and residents. However, the prompt evacuation and rapid response by the fire department have helped prevent a more severe disaster.
As authorities investigate the cause of the fire, the priority remains on ensuring the safety of the public and minimizing damage. The community is urged to stay away from the area to allow emergency services to carry out their operations efficiently. The incident at Acropolis Mall serves as a reminder of the importance of fire safety and the need for robust emergency response protocols in public spaces.
