Iceland National Day

As Iceland commemorates its National Day, the 80th anniversary of its independence and the 75th anniversary of its NATO membership stand as a testament to its resilient spirit and enduring partnerships. On this momentous occasion, Secretary of State Antony J. Blinken extends heartfelt congratulations to the Icelandic people, emphasizing the deep bonds that unite Iceland and the United States in their shared commitment to democratic principles and collective security.

The press release by U.S. Department of State also says that this extraordinary year marks the 80th anniversary of Iceland’s independence and the 75th anniversary of the NATO Alliance where we united as founding members. The United States is proud to have been the first country to recognize Iceland’s independence. We re-affirm today the strong and steadfast friendship between us, based on commitments to democratic principles, freedom, and our collective security as NATO Allies. Together, we are addressing persistent and newer shared challenges in the region and globally among a wide range of economic, human rights, security, and climate issues. Our bilateral defense bond since 1951, our people-to-people ties, and our cooperation in the Arctic Council are fundamental to ensuring a safe, stable, and prosperous Arctic region.

The close coordination between the United States and Iceland continues to be essential to support the people of Ukraine as they defend their country against Russia’s unprovoked war, and as we pursue justice and accountability for Russia’s brutal actions.
