In a groundbreaking move towards sustainability, the UK Ministry of Defence (MOD) has successfully concluded trials for hydrogen-fueled charging facilities, signaling a promising shift towards cleaner, more resilient energy solutions.
Could hydrogen be the key to a zero-emission future for Defence operations?
The MOD's recent trials of hydrogen-powered charging stations for electric vehicles have ushered in a new era of sustainable energy solutions within Defence. These trials, conducted across five strategic locations, have shown the immense potential of hydrogen as a reliable, eco-friendly power source for military operations. With the ability to generate enough electricity to cover 120,000 miles of travel, the trials demonstrate that hydrogen could be an integral part of the Defence sector’s future energy mix.
Initially launched in August 2023 at RAF Leeming, Devonport Naval Base, and Merville Barracks, the trial was later expanded to include HMS Excellent in Portsmouth and RAF Northolt. These locations served as testing grounds for the Hydrogen Power Units (HPUs), which efficiently converted hydrogen into electricity to power Defence’s growing electric vehicle (EV) fleet.
Air Vice-Marshal Rich Pratley, Assistant Chief of Defence Staff, highlighted the importance of this initiative, stating, “The MOD’s embrace of hydrogen power is a testament to our commitment to sustainability and operational efficiency. Hydrogen has proven to be a key enabler in our shift towards zero-emission energy solutions."
The hydrogen-powered units provided by GeoPura were pivotal in the success of these trials. These units transformed hydrogen into electricity, which was then used to charge electric vehicles via fast-charging posts. The HPUs offer a reliable, eco-friendly alternative, bypassing the limitations of traditional power grids. This ensures that even in remote or off-grid locations, Defence can continue to charge its EV fleet without harmful emissions.
The trial has sparked new conversations around the role hydrogen can play in not only powering electric vehicles but also in enhancing the operational resilience of Defence. This success has paved the way for future trials and initiatives focused on integrating hydrogen into other areas of Defence’s energy systems.
This pioneering project was a collaborative effort between the MOD, Defence Infrastructure Organisation (DIO), and industry expert GeoPura. The partnership allowed the MOD to leverage cutting-edge technology to meet its sustainability goals, while also enhancing operational efficiency in military contexts.
Matt Barney, Chief Hydrogen Business Officer at GeoPura, emphasized the transformative nature of this partnership: “By harnessing the power of green hydrogen, our generators ensure rapid charging without emissions, overcoming grid limitations and facilitating a cleaner future for electric vehicles."
