Russia's deployment of chemical weapons in Ukraine has led to swift action from the UK government. Discover the latest sanctions and what they mean for the ongoing conflict.
In response to Russia's use of chemical weapons on Ukrainian battlefields, the UK has imposed new sanctions targeting Russian military units and leaders. These sanctions come as Russian forces openly admitted to deploying hazardous chemical agents, including riot control agents and the toxic choking agent chloropicrin, notorious since World War I.
Russia's blatant violation of the Chemical Weapons Convention and previous use of the nerve agent Novichok in Salisbury and against opposition leader Alexei Navalny, prompted the UK's firm response. Among those sanctioned are the Radiological, Chemical, and Biological Defence Troops of the Russian Armed Forces and their leader, Igor Kirillov. Kirillov has also been known for spreading Kremlin disinformation.
Foreign Secretary David Lammy emphasized the UK's commitment to international law, stating, "We will not sit idly by while Putin and his mafia state disregard international norms." Lammy promised to use every available power to counter Russia’s malign activities.
Defence Secretary John Healey reiterated, "You cannot break international law without facing consequences." The UK is dedicated to supporting Ukraine and punishing those responsible for chemical attacks.
Two Russian Ministry of Defence laboratories have also been sanctioned for their role in developing and deploying these inhumane weapons. The UK stands resolute in its support for Ukraine, providing critical equipment and training to protect against chemical weapons.
With a pledge of £3 billion in annual military aid, the UK is determined to support Ukraine for as long as necessary. The commitment underscores the UK's iron-clad military, financial, diplomatic, and political support.
